Our Unimog is one of the ‘medium-heavy duty’ offroad series, type U1550L, serie 437.1, built from 1989 up till 2002. Built in 1989, ours was one of the first and there were 2364 Unimogs of this exact type (437.111).
The engine is a Mercedes OM366a, 6L engine, 6 cylinder in-line turbo diesel with 155hp and 540Nm of torque. It’s got a gearbox with 8 gears forward and backward. The theoretical topspeed with 14.5R20 tyres is 96.5 km/h.
With a kerb weight of about 5t, we need a truck drivers license to operate it.

The design
And then, the design… it isn’t easy. A few thing were clear though:
- a maximum height of 290cm
- because of this height, we need a lifting roof
- there has to be a passthrough from body to cabin
- there will be a shower, no shower, a shower still, but in the end, no shower, but for sure a toilet
- a decent, spacious place to sit
