After removing all fire fighter equipment, it’s time to design a new rear side on our Unimog. This includes required safety measures, but also new places for rear lights and so on.
Designing a new rear
Our first changes
Ofcourse, you run into things you’re not expecting. The French decided they needed to cut a piece from the rear chassis cross-member because of the waterpump. Martijn decided to fix this.
1. Remove the rear chassis cross-member 
2. The French cut a piece from it 
3. Replace it with some fresh steel 
4. All done!
Less is more
Our U1550 is an old French firefighter-truck. It includes a huge watertank, hose-reels and a PTO-driven pump. And ofcourse all the required parts to control all this. We’re taking it all off, that’s an easy job.

There’s some storage, hose reels, the PTO-drive pump and lots of wiring for flasher lights and pump control: we’re removing it all.
By removing the tank and pump, the structure for the wheelcovers and rear lights is removed as well. We’ve got to create something new for those.
Once all the fire-fighting stuff is removed, we get a clear view of the Unimog itself. Ideas start flowing!
There it is!
The next months (eh, years), we will be modifying this Unimog into an off-road camper truck! Excited!!
